Scotiabank Contact Photography Festival presents "Altered Images At Hand"

As part of the Scotiabank Contact Photography Festival The Propeller Gallery Presents: Altered Images At Hand. Altered Images at Hand, is an online exhibition exploring physical manipulation in photographic works.
Photography being used as a manipulated element within a greater work has significant historical precedents, and continues to be enthusiastically embraced by artists for the virtually unlimited possibilities.
This exhibition presents artists’ works that combine photographic elements altered through photo-collage and other manual techniques of physical modification including cutting, painting, texturing, layering, distorting, and more. It is through this creative intervention of the artist’s hand that new contexts and expressions become evident.

I will be exhibiting two pieces in this exhibit “Reflection-ism 4: MC Inception” and a collaborative piece with artist Jane Zamost called “Daylight 5!”.

Fabrica De Fotos / Covid-Topia Photography Exhibit

Fabrica De Fotos is a photography club of students and mentors embodying different cultures and generations, building unity through photography. Formed during the covid-19 pandemic, a group of students meets once a week through zoom with a mentor to discuss different photography methods and learn about the talent in our community.

Covid-Topia is a photograph exhibition based on how covid has affected us individually and as a community. Each student and mentor are exhibiting several photographs each, based on their experience with the pandemic.

I have three pieces on display for this exhibit the first is “The Picnic”, this piece reminds me of the loneliness some have experienced during covid. The second piece called “100” is the matriarch of a local family celebrating her 100th birthday sitting isolated surrounded by markers of her age. The final piece “29S” is a fading, but still in use railroad bridge. This photograph reminds of the travel most of us are missing out on during this pandemic.

10 x 10 Red Fundraising Exhibit @ Artworks Trenton

One of my favorite exhibits of the year to be a part of is Artworks Trenton's 10x10 Red Dot Fundraiser exhibit. It's a great fundraiser for Artworks and you can purchase art from some of your favorite artists that may normally be outside of your price range. Nothing is more than $100.00 during this exhibit. For those looking to start collecting art this is a great place to start. I'll be entering 2 pieces this year exclusively for Artworks. I have a new Reflection-ism piece that works as a 10x10. I'll only print 3 at the size that you'll only ever be able to purchase at Artworks. The piece will be titled Reflection-ism 8: Montgomery. The 2nd exclusive will be my piece Figure & Flag, which you will only ever be able to purchase from Artworks at $100.00 at this time of year. I'm looking forward to adding some artwork myself to expand the art collection in the smallest exhibit space at my home.

Be aware that the Opening Reception date has changed to December 5th. The time remains the same 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Some of you may not know that I am a two time kidney transplant recipient. During my long stay in the hospital, after my second transplant, the thing that got me through my time at the hospital was music. As I toured the Art and Healing gallery at Capital Health’s Pennington, NJ location I was told how patients some times stand before in a favorite piece of artwork and lose themselves in it for a time. I've picked 32 works of my art with that in mind. Which of my pieces tell a story that the viewer can get lost in. I remembered listening to certain tracks of music and for a time I was transported away from thoughts of treatment, recovery, worry or pain. It is my hope that the artwork I just to put on display will do the same for some of the viewers at Capital Health.

Art All Day

My art space will be open again with year for Art All Day and I’ll be sharing it with artist Jane Zamost.

Art All Day is Artworks Trenton's annual open studio tour. Each year, scores of artist studios, pop-up galleries, and businesses that contribute to the creative community open to the public for a day of art in all its forms. Trolley tours, walking tours, and a bike tour take visitors around, though many adventurers grab the print or online maps and explore on the own. It's a day where Trenton comes alive with its hidden art treasures, and many people's favorite way of discovering art in the city.

Everything starts & ends at Artworks, where you'll also find everything you'll need: maps, food from our participating food trucks, tours, trolleys, and plenty of space to park. Every participating artist also has a piece in the group show.

Artworks has out done themselves this year on the Art All Day website. Check out all the artists and locations which you can click on individually for more information. Click on Art All Day for more information.

Don’t forget to visit Artworks Trenton after you day of exploring the Amazing art scene of Trenton. At 6pm the Opening Reception for the Art All Day exhibit. If for you weren’t able to visit every studio all the artists on the tour will be represented in this exhibit.

Selelctions from The Collaborators @TigerLabs

Pushing the art form of photography via collaboration. Fine Arts Photographer C.a. Shofed suddenly realized that artist collaborations are a part of his artistic style. Over time he began to stretch the boundaries of his craft of fine art photography not necessarily by using software tools, but through collaborations with other artists. “The Collaborators” is his most intentional project to date using this “style”. Over the last two years he has worked with 13 artists to create collaborative pieces with his photography as the base of each new word created. Some of the pieces have been directed with much input by C.a. Shofed.  Other works he left  in the hands of his partner/collaborator. Each artist had a hand in choosing the picture they worked with.

The selected collaborators on display: Alia Bensliman, Laura Beard, Brigitte Aflalo-Calderon, Meredith Remz, Erica Rachel and of course me, C.a. Shofed.

As a bonus I also have on display two pieces for the Reflection-ism series.

The Crow and the Raven - Beard/Shofed, Untitled with and M - Remz/Shofed, Intersections on Single Plane - Vincent/Shofed. Baklawat Bey - Bensliman/Shofed and Bonus piece Reflection-ism 4: MC Inception.

Ellarslie Open 36 @ The Trenton City Museum - Trenton, NJ

New Jersey’s Premier Annual Juried Show
Over the years, the Ellarslie Open has become a significant exhibition, drawing from the work of professional artists while encouraging and recognizing the work of emerging artists. Today, the Ellarslie Open serves as New Jersey’s premier annual juried exhibit, with acceptance into the show being highly coveted.  the 36th annual Ellarslie Open broke all records for submissions in 2019, with 520 pieces submitted by 281 artists from the Delaware Valley and beyond. Nearly one hundred artists were first time applicants to the show. From the wide array of work by so many talented artists, the juror Liz Kelton Sheehan created an exhibition unlike any previous show, with a strong contemporary graphic component contrasted by more abstract works and highly-detailed still lifes.

My piece “Delltog” will be on display at the 36th version of the Ellarslie Open.

"Cloak and Dagger" a collaborative art piece by Kasso & Shofed @Trenton City Museum

The collaborative art piece created by Will Kasso and I will be on display at the Stand up Men! exhibit at the Trenton City Museum.

Stand Up Men is a celebration of Trenton’s African-American male artists and their use of canvas, photography, and sculpture to convey the pathos of what it means to exist as a man within the realm of Trenton’s Black culture and beyond. We invite you to explore the world within Trenton which is largely ignored or subsumed by perceptions of rampant violence and urban decay. “Stand Up Men” inhabits the world of the quiet, deliberate Trenton arts movement forged in love, life, and courage.

The featured artists featured in ”Stand up Men!” are:

Will Kasso, Habiyb Shu’Aib and Autin Dean Wright

Iron, Water, Wood @ The JKC Gallery

Coming in 2019 Iron, Water, Wood. Opening Reception and Artist talk January 30th 5 to 7 pm More information to come.

As I have worked with the JKC Gallery curator Michael Dalton to put together the "Iron and Water" solo exhibit. I realized Michael was gravitating towards my earlier artwork. My photography early on was more traditional then what I'm doing now. The foundations between my earlier work and what I’m doing now are the same, but now I'm pushing the boundaries of my work in photography. I’m not so worried about the technical aspect of how a photograph is built, my goal now is about the story or what I envision in my head. Am I presenting that vision to the viewer? I don’t think traditional photographers would be comfortable with where I’m going. So this exhibit is almost becoming a retrospective of the beginning of my career. There will be some new pieces, but pieces that as if Craig the photographer at the beginning of his career could ask the artist C.a. Shofed for some pointers. During the artist talk I’ll do my best to describe my journey and how I ended up where I am today.
